Once Endearing Trait Some Come To Hate
Peter Pan is the story of a boy who refused to grow up choosing rather to live in Never Never Land. Some who once admired the boyishness or girlishness of their mate come to hate that trait later. Frustration with our inability to change someone else’s behavior is not itself a very attractive nor endearing trait.
Love is patient and love is kind, yet forever trying to change someone is neither loving, patient, nor kind. Even “self-improvement” projects would be more loving if they were more “self appreciation” projects instead.
As a treat to the poor students at Jefferson Street Elementary just before Christmas break 1960 some wealthy benefactors paid to have the whole school, teachers and students, bused to a movie theater to see a rerelease of Disney’s 1953 animated classic Peter Pan. After the movie we were taken to the homes of these actually middle-class benefactors (the seemed wealthy to us) and given Christmas treats and two large shopping bags of Christmas presents each. It was like Halloween and Christmas combined.
The movie and book Peter Pan have always been favorites of mine. “Fairytales can come true if you’re young at heart” sang Frank Sinatra and some years later Jimmy Buffet had a slightly different take on the same theme with his Growing Older But Not Up.
