The Enchantment
Disney’s live action Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorites. I have watched the movie and listened to the soundtrack more times than I can count. Today’s children’s book reading and YouTube link are both the prologue to the story and set the stage for the tale as old as time which answers the age old question “How could anyone learn to love a beast?”
The enchantress cast her spell not to punish the selfish and uncaring Prince nor to punish his servants, but to teach him how to love. That his servants truly loved him is evident by their devotion and care for him. That he does not love himself is equally evident and the root cause of his curse for one cannot truly love the Universe nor one’s neighbor if one does not love himself or herself.
As the last petal of the enchanted rose falls the curse is miraculously broken by true love’s kiss. Belle has indeed fallen in love with the Beast, yet not before he has first learned to love himself. His unselfish act of letting her go reveals the goodness in him that even he can love. Of all the beautiful love songs in the movie, Evermore is to me the most hauntingly beautiful for it shows that even a Beast is capable of loving and being loved. Angel and beast, divine and yet mankind, that is Who we are.
