We Can All Be Angels If Not Saints
Elizabeth in today’s children’s book like most of us is Not a saint but she can, as can we all, still be an angel. The Bible defines angels as “ministering spirits.” They are never jobless nor bored who serve. Even the Blues Brothers who were far from perfect found a mission from God to give their lives purpose and meaning.
Jesus biggest problem with the “church folk” of his day and today is that they were and are too busy pretending to be perfect to be of much service to anyone even themselves. The Velveteen Rabbit story teaches us that love makes you real. It is conversely true that being real makes you love. Instead of trying to mold children, ourselves, or others into some plastic model to be venerated we would do well to follow our hearts and minds and be of service to the greater good by being who we are, warts and all. The thing about heroes is they seldom realize their acts are heroic, them simply see something that needs being done and do it.
I believe there are few if any real saints around, yet I do believe that we have all entertained and been angels unaware. “Every time a bell rings another angel wins his or her wings.” Isn’t that right, Clarence and Elizabeth?
