Looking For A Hero?

Yesterday, I watched again for the I forget how many times the movie Superman Returns. It is unique among the Superman movies for it is was an attempted relaunch of the series after the four films of Christopher Reeve (from 1978 to 1987). It was released in 2006 with Brandon Roth in the lead role supported by a cast of other one time key players including Kate Boswell as Lois Lane, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther, and Frank Langella as Perry White. Roth nor the others were never to repeat their roles and in 2013 a new relaunch of the Superman movies series was introduced with Henry Cavill in the lead and a whole new cast of supporting characters who for the better part of ten years have played these roles in five movies but Man of Steel was the only one that was a Superman stand alone super hero movie.

I said all that to introduce my theme today which the Return of Superman movie suggests. Do we really need a Superman, a hero, a savior? It is no big surprise how the Superman story is so similar to the Jesus story, and even that story contrary to what many Christianity believe is not a unique nor new story but borrowed from many older legends about the God or Gods sending their son to this world to save it and us.

What I think all these super hero stories tell us is that there is a hero in everyone of us and that we need no other to save us. Snoopy: Flying Ace to the Rescue is but one more hero story. Snoopy is us reimagined, relaunched, and saving ourselves and the world.

Looking for a hero, a savior? Till you find him or her in the mirror you got a long way to go.
