The Christmas Tree That Cried

I spent two wonderful winters in Wisconsin, a couple also in Wyoming, Colorado, and Indiana so this Southern born and bred boy has had more than a taste of snow, frozen rivers, and lakes in the North Country where Christmas trees grow.

The first time I saw a frozen lake I marveled also the first time I saw a frozen river and every time thereafter as well. I am, I think, sometimes a person out of place. Christmas is my favorite season and with Elvis my heart sings, “Why Can’t Everyday Be like Christmas?”

I found today’s children’s book in a used book shop in Indiana while working there four years ago now. It was written by a local author and it really touched my heart as I hope it will yours.

I first heard and fell in love with the song River when I heard it sung by Ben Platt on his Netflix series The Politician. I had never heard Joni Mitchell’s original version but find in hauntingly beautiful as well. Sometimes, I too, wish I had a river I could skate away on, especially on these already hot almost summer Houston morning and evenings.

The HBO Game Of Thrones warning “Winter Is Coming” was never so much a threat as a promise to this misplaced person. I must have been an Eskimo in a previous life. Maybe next time around I will be again.
