Some Things Bear Repeating
Often repetition is used for emphasis. I have heard more than one college professor say, “Anything you hear more than once is probably going to be on the test.” Repetition is how we learn and since very few of us have photographic memories we need to hear things several times before they click, before they stick.
Fred Rogers of the long running PBS Children’s Show, Mister Roger’s Neighbor, knew the power of repetition in teaching the important lessons to children. At the beginning of every show he carefully took off his coat and shoes, putting on comfy ones, making himself and his audience feel at home. His line “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Was repeated so many times that a generation and a half of children all considered themselves part of Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. For thirty years there hung a small plaque on the puppet stage in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe that had the numbers 143 which stood for the three words that Mister Rogers wanted most to communicate to children everywhere, “I Love You.”
No matter our age we still need to hear it not just once, twice or even three times a day but so often that we never forget for long just Who and Whose we truly are. Even if we lose our temper, misbehave, or forget everything and everyone we ever knew it is still forever true, “I love you, I love you, I love you.”
