The Importance Of Touch
I thought of titling this piece “Short Of Sexual Touching” but decided on the title I chose. Marvin Gaye sang a song called sexual healing that I think is very true but there just is no discounting the importance of the human touch. Babies need it and will literally die without it and there is a baby in all of us that needs to be touched and cared for all of the time. No one can do that job better than you and I. And since, much as I might like to, I cannot always be there for you there are somethings you need to learn to do for yourself.
Every loving parent wants their baby to grow and to become independent and self sufficient, to discover the wondrous resources available to them, inside themselves. And contrary to what most of us might think raising a child is not so much a building into them project as it is an unveiling the wonders within them project. I learned a great deal more from my children than I could ever teach them. Wiser people from previous generations had many more children and that is I think what made them wise.
We wrongly think we should only have one or two because it costs so much in time, money, and attention to raise them. But that just is not true. Children are the true true treasures and are more deserving of our time and attention than anyone or anything else, especially that child inside each one of us.
Diana Ross sang many wonderful songs. One of the most wonderful ones says, “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand, make this world a better place if you can.” If you are by yourself, or think you are, take your own hand and feel the importance of the most needed touch in your life.
