What Is A Friend?

A friend is someone that you see the best of yourself in. Dave, don’t you know that a good writer takes his time answering such an important question, like an artist paints the scenery, brings the eye to the center of a painting where the viewer sees the trail and follows it to end of the trail. Yeah, I know all that but sometime it is just as nice to start at the end of the trail and work backwards.

The great criticism of many is, “It’s all about you.” Well, isn’t it really? One of the most selfish things in the world is a screaming baby but when the need that prompted that outcry – food, a change, or just to be held is met that angry little hostage-taking terrorist can become the sweetest, cuddliest, smilingest creature in heaven or on earth. That is the inner child in all of us.

Oh, no, not another diatribe about being nice to our inner child. A couple of days ago I witnessed a construction job foreman “reading the riot act” to one of his employees. Do you know that expression “reading the riot act” ? It means really blasting someone verbally. I remarked loudly enough so that he and the entire crew could hear me, “You must really be hard on your inner child.” Listen to yourself, the way you talk to others especially when you are really angry with yourself is how you treat your inner child.

It is also as true as seeing in our friends the best of ourselves that we see in our “supposed enemies” the worst of us. Yes, I said supposed enemies for I believe that I have not now nor never had any enemies, just friends that I really did not take the time to get to know. What about you, friend? Made any new friends lately?

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
