Do Not Fear The Shadows

Shadows are not real as the Pooh Picture says “…they simply mean there’s a light shining somewhere nearby.” Three days after Halloween and two days after All Saints Day I would like to tell all my church and pagan friends – relax the ghosts and goblins, demons and witches are just stories that children like to scare themselves with. I never quite bought into church people condemning folks for telling ghost stories and having fun on Halloween, anymore than I bought into their too short list of Saints. Why, New Orleans alone has had more football players than that and bands have played to many more marching in and out than that paltry little list.

Tomorrow in a blog called What Ever Happened To Civil Public Discourse I mention “gate keepers” and how I think religion is big business and I hope someday there will be a big “going out of business” sale, a “fired” sale. The Almighty was once quoted by one of his better representatives as saying, “You have made merchandise of my people.” Con men, snake oil salesmen, and politicians are always preaching that they alone have the cure for what ails you. First they have to convince you that you are hopelessly sick and desperately need their cure. They have always dealt in shadows, smoke and mirrors, and scary tales of hell and demons. A little light may cause a shadow but a lot of light melts them all away.

“Step into the sunshine. Step out of the shade. This is the one time that you’ve got it made. Feel yourself floating right out of your shoes. Step into the sunshine of the great good news.” Some times religious people have such a sad and unhealthy outlook on life for people who are supposed to be living and preaching “Good News.” Perhaps they got the message a little garbled with all the judging, condemning, guilt, and short lists. I like to think of the good news as a note from the Universe saying, “I love you, always have, always will, no matter what. Don’t be afraid of shadows, E.T., just turn on your heart light.”
