It Takes One To Love One

I heard myself saying in my own defense recently that I am not a complete asshole just a sometimes one and that the beloved person that I was addressing was neither a total bitch just a sometimes one. We both, great minds that we are, at the same time thought of the expression, “It Takes One To Know One.” Of course it does. All you Gone With The Wind book and movie fans know that was the real reason that Melanie Wilkes could not conceive of treachery in anyone she loved, especially Scarlett, because it was not in her. We only recognize in others what is in us. My beloved friend turned the tired old expression that we quoted completely around in the sweetest way. She said, “It Takes One To Love One.” I said, wait a minute, I’ve got to write that down. And I did knowing it would be the seed for this blog.

For some time now I have rejected the duality that I was born into and grew up with. Why, I even had a tattoo of the ying and yang symbol placed on my chest, wear a ring most days with that symbol on it, and even have a ceramic one hanging on my truck visor to constantly remind me to think Oneness thoughts and not the old duality ones. For me there is no war in heaven, between the sexes, nor between me and any of my brothers for we are one. I cannot steal, kill, or cheat anyone without doing it to myself, nor can they me without harming themselves. To me, God is One, and so are we. We are all in this together.

So my friend’s turn of phrase was pregnant, full of life and meaning to me. It takes One (God) to love one (Also God). I have quoted the First Intention for a Better World often and will again in its entirety here:

“I refrain from opposing or harming anyone. I allow others to have their own experiences. I see life in all things and honor it as if it were my own. I support life.”

That is what a true God would do and as that is Who and Who’s we are, we should too, taking those wonderful words to heart, “It Takes One To Love One.”

Your friend and fellow traveler,

David White
