I Love That Guy, Doesn’t Everybody?

Well, perhaps not everybody does, but there are only two possible reasons in my quite possibly limited understanding for that. First, not everyone knows me (I am trying to remedy that) and secondly perhaps a few think they know me, but really don’t. I sincerely believe that it is the case with me and everyone of you as well that to truly know us is to love us. It is quite possible that many people allow one of our opinions or actions to shape their whole take on us. Just as you cannot judge a book by its cover you cannot take the full measure of a person in a snap shot. There are deep layers of goodness and greatness in even the children of the Universe that might at first glance be thought to be children of a lesser god. There was a great movie called Children Of A Lesser God starring William Hurt some years back that dealt with a caring teacher who worked with deaf children. One of the most beautiful shining stars of wonder that I have ever met in all my years, Amy, was born deaf and today has blossomed and become a beautiful woman with a loving husband, two handsome twin sons, and has shown herself to be a true treasure and indeed no lesser child than any other child ever born including J.C. Himself.

And before you Christians get upset with me his own words, “As I am so are you in the world and greater works than I have done you will do because I go to the father.” I really do enjoy messing with you guys and with every religious group that erroneously believes that they have a special “in” with God. “God’s chosen people” is a ridiculous concept. The God of the Universe is not a mere human parent that loves one child or one group of children above others. Only a silly man could have penned such an idea and thereby made so many feel less worthy of a perfect parent’s love and affection.

Amy loves herself, always has, and has love enough to share with all. If you think I tease about loving the guy in the picture, I do not. He is my hero. That, in my case, has not always been the case. As a boy, teenager, young man, even past middle age (What is that anyway? For a guy who aims at living well into his hundreds, I am just getting there now.) I was still looking for a hero. I am reminded of the Whitney Houston song, The Greatest Love Of All. She sings, “Everybody’s looking for a hero. I never found anyone to fulfill my need, until I learned to depend on me.” Amen, Whitney, that is some good preaching. Probably not something you will hear in Sunday School. And why not? Because most religions teach a weak “You need something, bigger, better outside yourself to make you whole or complete nonsense.” Pigs squeal and that is pig’s swill. There lives in every child of the Universe, the God of all the Universe, and we need nothing and no one outside of us to be what we were created to be and what we have always been – magnificent beings awakening to our highest potential.

Yes, I love that guy. Someone very dear to me sent me this picture and said it was one of her favorites of me and that she had carried it in her wallet for years. It is nice to have such devoted fans. I am one of hers as well and yours.

Your friend and fellow traveler,

And devoted fan,

David White
