Imagine This Is Heaven

Imagine This Is Heaven

I saw a sign in someones yard with the family name and in quotes “ONE DAY CLOSER TO HEAVEN.” I used to think like that but for some time I have thought, “Why wait?”

John Lennon wrote a beautiful song he titled “Imagine” and the first line begins, “Imagine there’s no heaven. It’s easy if you try. No hell below us above us only sky.”

I would like to rewrite that song, not because I think I am a better song writer than John, I do not, but because I believe in heaven and in the positive thinking principle. Here goes.

Imagine this is heaven
Right before your very eyes
Heaven in the rain and snow storm
Not just the sunny clear blue skies.

Imagine all the people
Living in peaceful accord
Umbrella stands and plowshares
Made from shell casings and swords.

Imagine all us people
As we all thoughts of hate release
This world is truly heaven
A place of love and peace.

You may say I’m a dreamer
But the dream is already begun
Peace train already left the station
Get on board – while we’re young.

Well, if you are saying John Lennon’s legacy as a song writer is safe from upstarts like me I could not agree more. But, there are some songs that still need to be written and sung and I for one intend to do that as long as I can make a key stroke or hum a tune. And I plan to do my part to make heaven right here and right now. Sometimes I think we misunderstand The Lord’s Prayer. When Jesus said, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” Who was he talking to – his brothers (sisters too) me and you. And Jesus always lived in the now. I can hear the crowd chanting, “When do we want it? We want it now.” Several versions of a movie titled, “Heaven Can Wait” have come out over the years but heaven cannot wait. It is in each one of us and wants out.

I repeat, “May your kingdom come. May your will be done.” Heaven was never meant to be a “by and by” proposition but a “now and now” One – “on earth…heaven, as you will.” That is a heaven of an idea.

  1. Wonderful. I have always loved this song, but found it to lack resolution, like there was a slightly cynical doubt in the wings of the chorus, but you have indeed resolved it, that I like.
