The Relationships That Last

We only get to always keep
Stuff and people we let go
Love needs plenty of room
If it is to grow and to glow.

The moments we most savor,
The ones we have fully tasted
Love may seem short or long,
Love moments never wasted.

Those moments are ours
The memories never fade
Memories most treasured
The acts of love we made.

Things we hold onto hardest
So easily slip from our grasp
Hearts and hands held lightly
Are the relationships that last.

I enjoy being able to make my own songs (poems) a part of my blogs. As soon as I can figure out how, I plan to also to attach links to some of my favorite karaoke songs as well. That ought to get me a comment or two. Which reminds me of a great seminar instructor I had once who concluded all his lessons with:  “Any comments, questions, or snide remarks?” I welcome all your feedback, questions, comments and yes even snide remarks. But be careful with snide remarks for they may tell others more about you than you intend to reveal. True friends can say just about anything they want to one another because love is a language that translates our harshest and most hurtful words into something of use. I heard someone say and I believe it, “Every word is either a word of love or a cry for love.”

All lasting relationships have their basis in love. It is stronger than blood, family, clan, club, and religious or political beliefs. I have even heard it is even possible for love to be stronger than ones affiliation to their sports team. Yeah, I know that may be stretching the power of love a bit. Made you smile. Love is stronger and more powerful than lightning, a tornado, a hurricane, or even a hydrogen bomb. It is from out of this world and will return there. And any relationship rooted and grounded in love will last longer than these bodies we inhabit.

I have heard tributes and have even written a few, praising mother’s love, father’s love, and the love between lovers, but in my humble opinion, second only to the thrill of the love one ought to feel for themself is a brother/sister or friend’s love. Jesus said shortly before his voluntary death – “There is no greater love than to give your life for you friends.” I think we most often misunderstand his meaning. If one does not love themself fully and completely any such sacrifice would be a sort of sham. But if you really know Who and Whose you are and put all that on the line to save someone else, then my friend you along with Jesus truly are acting like a Child of the Most High God. An atheist would say that is because “I am” is the highest god there is and to risk that for someone else is the highest form of love or sacrifice. “I Am” prefers a living sacrifice, so it is best to live our lives fully for ourself and others and forget all that sacrificing stuff.

We are all related. We are all really One. Our relationships may seem strained at times but the reality is like an old song says, “Blest be the tie that binds.” A newer song by The Indigo Girls called The Power Of Two has these words:

“The closer I’m bound in love to you, the closer I am to free-ee-ee. So we’re      okay, we’re fine. Baby, I’m here to stop your crying, chase all the ghosts           from your head, I’m stronger than the monster beneath your bed, smarter     than the tricks played on your heart. We’ll get them together then we’ll             take them apart. Adding up the total of a love that’s true, multiplying life         by the power of two.”

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
