No Regrets

I think we have it so backward
That concern with what we do
What matters most to ghosts
The undone when life is though.

I coined that little poem to make a point. I believe, of far greater concern when we are done with this adventure will not be the misguided steps we may have taken nor the the deeds perhaps that we have done but the great regrets for all the things we might have left unsaid or left undone. The expressions, “Why didn’t I do want I wanted too?” or “What was I saving it for?” might haunt many souls. Many people are quite sure that spirits do not linger here after their lives are over. Though I have never encountered a ghost I do not discount their existence on this plane. The stories are many but all the plots are the same the spirits seem trapped here to re-live over and over again some unresolved business. Now that would be a living hell or a dying one, always reaching never being able to grasp. And sounds hauntingly like the lives that we ourselves most often find ourselves living.

Many people’s lives feel so much like that, hungry for something they do not have, always longing for some unfulfilled wish. Jimminy Cricket, Pinochio’s conscience, in Disney’s full length cartoon, Pinochio, sang:

“When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
When you wish upon a star
 Your dreams come true.”

I happen to believe that is what is always true and that our real problem is not that our dreams are not coming true but that we are not good shepherds of our wooly dreams allowing our nightmares more stage time than our sweet dreams. Nightmares seem to cancel out sweet dreams if focused on. What we think about most becomes our reality. Fear and worry bring you more of the same. Love and gratitude more of the like.

Big dreamers are always dreaming bigger dreams and seeing them come true. The biggest regret of all would be to come to the end of this adventure and realized that it could have been anything you dreamed but you failed to dream your grandest dream. I like the Dreamworks logo that Stephen Spielberg came up with for his production company some years back. We all have our own Dreamworks company cranking out dreams. I say to you, I say to all – Sweet dreams with no regrets.

  1. Very true! Your words actually brought a tear…or two…to my eyes. It cut straight to the heart pointing out where I am in life right now. I find myself asking on a daily basis; do I dare keep dreaming for better and hope it is out there or do I focus on what I have now and make do? Thanks for writing!
