( I am unable to get a repeat from Emily’s book to post this morning so I will try to post this short Emily story not in the book that I planned to post next month. I hope you Emily fans will enjoy it and that it will post. I am grateful for even technical difficulties.)
New Kids On The Block
An episode with my daughter that I did not cover in the book I am posting this month is about a time that I took her and her best friend Cindy to a New Kids On The Block concert. It was as you can imagine one of my finest “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread” moments. But the girls had a great time and I, well, I survived not by the hair of my chinny chin chin but by the cotton balls in my ears. Always the Boy Scouts I was prepared and even brought enough cotton balls to share with the other parent/guardians around me.
They say that one of the first signs that you are getting older is when you complain, “The music is too loud and I can’t understand the words.” I did understand the words to NKOTB songs, in fact they reminded me a lot of the Early Beatles, but I got a lot older at that concert and even the cotton balls could not help me enough to keep me from quoting Huey Lewis cameo line from the movie, Back To The Future. Huey Lewis, himself a rock and roller, played I think Marty’s High School Principle and head of a committee auditioning bands to play at the prom. After Marty’s band does an especially loud number, a bespectacled and slicked back haired Huey picks up a electronic megaphone and says, “The music is just too damned loud.” an ironic and comical moment.
I am glad and grateful that I got to take Emily and Cindy to see the New Kids On The Block. I came across this picture of myself and the girls with my small son Jonathan, himself at the time a new kid on the block, on my shoulder. The picture was taken just before we left for the concert, see I am smiling. It was in spite of the very loud music and crowd a wonderful time with two screaming young girls. And every time I see Danny Wahlberg on Blue Bloods or in a movie I remember his bad boy personna as one of the New Kids On The Block. I am still a fan of Danny Wahlberg, New Kids On The Block and if you have not guessed, the talented and lovely Emily Elaine White.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White

I ❤️ this. I love me some New Kids (even now!). Beth took us to see them in 1988 so Momma and a daddy got out of going. Ha
I’d love to have those T-shirts now though!
