Heaven Not Hell Awaits

Some people might question where all of my ideas for blogs come from? Others who read my blogs more frequently might wonder why I repeat some of the same themes and ideas a lot. But those who know me best know that “I am just full of it (I shortened the spelling of that last word) and that I can write five hundred words about practically nothing and probably have too many times. Ideas for blogs come to me all the time and I try to jot them down quickly before I forget them so usually I keep a running list of ideas to use as blog starters.

Just like making soup or anything really if you keep a few ideas on the back burner, percolating, then producing an end product is a much easier and a more evenly flowing process. The kind of writer I want to be is a writer like the doctor, lawyer, and philospher that Robert Heinlein wrote about in his classic sci-fi book Stranger In A Strange Land. Haven’t read it? Do yourself a favor and do. It is one of the best books ever written sci-fi or otherwise. The writer within the book has three lovely secretaries always on call to transcribe his thoughts for publication. He writes under several names and in several genres. Of course, all those nom de plumes are popular, well known, and his words are in such demand that he has only to spend a few minutes each day to earn more than enough to keep his large household going. Yep, that’s the kind of writer I intend to be. But missing that mark I am prepared to share all of my ideas for free.

Over concern for fame and fortune to me seem stiffling or at least it takes the shine off the creative urge. And do not get me wrong for at least in one sense we are all whores – we work for money. But to me the best, truest and most fun sense of the word whore is someone who loves what they do so much that they would do it gladly for free just to get to do it. In that sense I am a whore and proud of it. Jesus said to the straight laced, pleasure restrictive, judgemental, and strictly for profit religious folks of his day that the whores would be first to enter the kingdom of heaven and ahead of them. Doing what you love to do and would do whether you got paid for it or not and then getting paid a lot for it too – well that is heaven.

Love what you do and do what you love and if you can find a way to get paid for it more power to you. Who said you have to do something you hate or compromise what you love so much that you end up hating it to make a living. I  would rather, to continue an analogy some of you may not like, be content to work my own little corner providing a service giving at least hope and happy endings to few than prostitute my gifts for a pile of Benjamins. But smile boys and girl you really can have your Kate and Edith too or your Tom and Jerry depending on your taste. Do not let your time and your tallents or all those wonderful artistic ideas and urges go to waste. Do what you love and love what you do. Heaven awaits.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
