Small To Say The Least

It is incredible to me that a slight change of heart or mind can produce such a wonderful new and better world for a person. Do you suppose it might be because we live in a dream world where by our thoughts we make all our dreams come true? Could it really be that what thoughts we dwell on become our reality? Nah, say the scientists, the doctors and the lawyers. Life is cold hard facts, cause and effect. But what is behind all those causes and effects but mind and emotions that give our thoughts mass and motion. I believe we swim in magical waters and walk in secret gardens with the power inside us to transform our world into whatever we think it to be.

Just a little change of mind, small to say the least can change the whole direction of our life. Look back on those decisive change moments in our life and remember if you can what a little change of thought redirected our course. We are where we are today with the things and people in our lives because of the thoughts we chose to think and act upon in the past. If we have made mistakes to be sure the Universe has made adjustments for them for indeed all things work together for our good. Even so we can choose always to think the highest and best and assist the Universe in making the best of time and space for ourselves and others.

Sometimes we are all carried away by what we perceive to be the big things, the big deals, in our lives but far more often it is the little things left undone or unsaid, even unthought, that could make the biggest difference in our lives. First be it here and now highly resolved that we (Me, I) will pay attention to my thoughts and be sure that they are mine and not someone else’s. That is always the first check point before any journey – to ask the question, “Is this really what I want, my thinking or someone’s else?” All too often we allow others to do our thinking for us. That is just plain crazy and well lazy. No wonder as Phil Collins sang, we sadly are living “separate lives.” – Separated from our selves. We are trying to live someone else’s thoughts and life and one size rarely if ever fits all.

Many of you know the expression and have probably used it, “He (or she) marches to a different drummer.” We usually use that phrase to mean that person is odd, peculiar, or is out of step. But I ask you to consider whose drum are we marching to? Ought we not each of us set the beat for our own lives, the pace, and set our own course? I love the line, “I am the captain of my fate, the master of all I survey.” If you have yielded the wheel of your ship to someone else take it back. As a young man I saw a sign that said “God is my Co-pilot” and I remember thinking at the time that they had that wrong, that it should have read, God is my pilot and I the co-pilot.” But I have come to believe they had it right. A good father wants his child to grow, to mature, and to become responsible enough to not just a car by themselves but to pilot and decide their own life.

Greyhound used to say, “Leave the driving to us.” Isn’t that what most advertising, religions, political parties, unions, clubs etc. are really saying “let us drive and do the thinking for you.” That may seem fine if we are sure they are taking us where we really want to go. But do we really just want to be “taken for a ride” or explore all our options and pick and choose our own path. I have seen a lot of this big blue ball and the most meaningful and exciting adventures have not been “guided tours” but those wonderful finds off on the paths less traveled.

I encourage everyone to consider a small change in our thinking today that could very possibly change not only our perspective but our whole life in a good way. Change is not the enemy – getting the needle stuck in the same groove repeating the same refrain is to miss much of the music of our lives. Sometimes we need to change our thinking to change the record and not even because we are not enjoying the tune, just for a little change.

David White
