Lives Lived In Between

Hot summers/snowy winters we remember
But our lives are lived mostly in between
On streets not always bright and beautiful
But neither always hard-cobbled and mean.

Somewhere in the chewy gooy center
Neither hot/cold nor hard/soft extreme
Most of us take and give, love and live
And experience our sweetest dream.

I just thought up that original poem as I centered my thoughts on how important it is for us to avoid as much as we can the dramas of traumas and extremes of life by living more centered, in between. Being temperate in all things does not mean being tepid or missing out but moderating our moods and making the most of our lives. I was just telling someone recently that many creative and artistic people have been bi-polar or schizophrenic with great emotional highs and low mood swings. I think many of us have experienced a little bit of that in life but most not to that extent. How difficult it is to watch a loved one struggle even in those manic blissful highs knowing there is a looming coming crash with dark depressive often suicidal low. Life is so much more fun in the middle lands not in the deep valleys or on the frozen pinnacles of high mountains but half way in between. There you can enjoy both, taking in it all.

I recently saw a great line in a philosophy book that I have been reading. It said, “He who finds the center of Himself (Herself) finds the Center of the Cosmos, for at last, they are ONE!” I think most of us who have lived, experienced, and learned anything really desire to be a teacher and share that knowledge. I am reminded of a great thought that I came across in the Bible, as a young man, imagine that. I think I can still quote it from memory, “But you have no need of a teacher for you have the holy spirit within you to teach you.” And I know, many Christian groups and others have their own particular interpretation of what those words mean but I think they mean that at the center of each of us is all we need to know, all we need to be who we truly always have been and are. Pretty powerful stuff, Teacher. And you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Take a peak behind the curtain, go inside, to the center of your being, and you might be as  surprised as the guy was in the Pina Colada Song and find yourself saying out loud, “Ah, it’s you.” One of my boyhood favorite sci-fi moves was Jules Verne’s classic tale “Journey To The Center Of The Earth.” I ask you to consider an even more marvelous sci-true story that only you can write or tell. I call it, “Journey To The Center Of You.” It is the adventure of perhaps many lifetimes.
