Follow Your Arrow Wherever It Points

Some believe that there is a “One size fits all” map for living life. And it is not surprising that this erroneous idea causes so much sadness and distress, fighting, and trouble in the world. I believe that each and every one us us is on a special mission from God and fulfilling that mission is allowing the Divine in us to live out a unique and abundant life. There is so much variety all around us in nature. Why would we believe for a moment that we are to be carbon copies of another or follow someone else’s road when the real adventure is to be found in following your own path?

A dear and talented friend, Kimmie C, recorded a CD where she covers several contemporary country songs and I am so grateful that I got to hear her sing many of them live. One is the title that I gave to this blog. I quote the song as Kimmie C sings it here:

Follow Your Arrow
Written by: Brandy Lynn Clark, Kacey Musgrave, and Shane L. McAnally

“If you save yourself for marriage you’re a bore
If you don’t save yourself for marriage you’re a horr-ible person.
If you won’t have a drink then you’re a prude
They’ll call you a drunk as soon as you down the first one.

If you can’t lose the weight well you’re just fat
If you lose too much then you’re on crack.
Damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t
So you might as well just do whatever you want.

So make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys,
Kiss lots of girls, if that’s something you’re into.
When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight
Roll up a joint, or don’t,  just follow your arrow wherever it points.
Just follow your arrow wherever it points.

If you don’t go to church you’ll go to hell
If you’re the first one in the first row you’re a self righteous son of a
Can’t win for losing you’ll just disappoint them
Just ’cause you can’t beat them don’t mean you should join them.

Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys
Kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into
When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight
Light up a joint, or don’t, just follow your arrow wherever it points.
Follow your arrow wherever it points.

Say what you think, love who you love,
You only get so many trips around the sun
Yeah, you only, only live once.

So make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys
Kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into
When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight
Light up a joint, or don’t, just follow your arrow wherever it points.
Follow your arrow wherever it points.”

How boring for God, us, or others to live the same life over and over again when we were meant to live lives of adventure, truly abundant lives. The way to do that best, I think, is not to follow somebody else’s rules but to follow your arrow wherever it points. From the Manufacturer we each came with an internal guidance system, a compass. Our compass was set to true North and the GPS set for the best way for us individually to get there, usually a long and winding road with many surpize detours and scenic attractions. We will each of us enjoy our own journey and get there happiest and best not by following someone else or another’s itinerary or directions but by following the arrow at the center of our own heart – wherever it points.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
