The Rule Of Might, Of Law, And Of Love
Each week day I receive in my email a Note From The Universe. These short, personal, and pointed messages are always a blessing and I am grateful that author Mike Dooley takes the time to share his inspirational thoughts. I am quite sure he would not mind me sharing one I received a few days ago and encouraging all my friends to sign up for their own daily dose of wisdom from beyond at Notes From The Universe. Here’s what one note read:
“David,
Primitive societies live by the Rule of Might, and the strong prevail.
Advanced societies live by the Rule of Law, and the privileged prevail.
Enlightened societies live by the Rule of Love, and everyone is lifted higher.”
I love that and can see that our society is still mostly primitive and somewhat advanced but I am hopeful that more and more are becoming Enlightened. When the emphasis is mostly on Military Might and Law and Order the strong and the privileged will always prevail but when love and compassion take preeminence everyone is a winner.
So many of our popular books, movies, and TV shows are about violence and those with the biggest muscles or biggest guns rule. And we wonder why bullying is such a problem in our schools. When our actions as a nation, as a people, as parents scream, “I am bigger, I am stronger than you therefore you must do as I say.” what is the lesson we are teaching? Might makes right, it never has and it never will. Only love makes it and gets it right.
And for all you Law and Order fans, who are always rooting for justice to prevail. I remember so well a quote from Bob Harrington, the preacher of Bourbon Street: “Man, I don’t want justice I want mercy.” It is our ego that yells for justice, for revenge, for pay back. Love calls for forgiveness, for mercy, for compassion, for healing, wholeness, and restoration.
The rules are always written by the rich and privileged to benefit them the most. It is only love that looks out for the little guy for love far better than might or law knows that we are all little guys and that if one little guy is mistreated we are all the less for it. Love has no lesser brothers and sisters. Love knows the real meaning of Jesus words, “The least of these my brothers” to be not less but the best. Love loves us all of us the best, sees the best in everyone and everything, and brings out the best in us. Love is the one rule we should live by.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
