The Best Of Me

There is a great line at the end of the movie, The Best Of Me, based on the book by Nicholas Sparks where a man writes to the great love of his life, “You are the best of me.” I believe those are the words of the great Lover to His beloved, His Creation, in whole and specifically to you, and to me, and everyone, and everything, “You are the best of me.” Someone has said when you really know someone you cannot help but love them and that if you don’t love someone or something all that means is that you don’t really know them or it very well. It is evident that often we do not even know ourselves let alone others.

Often a parent might feel like a child is the very best of them and that is how parents ought to feel about their children. How much greater are the chances that a child will live up to his or her full potential when they believe they are regarded by their parent as the best of them. Some may think you get the best out of children by beating submission and obedience into into them but I happen to believe that love and appreciation inspires and that criticism and harsh treatment demotivates and stunts growth and potential. The children who overcome and succeed in a harsh critical environment are the exception not the rule and they amount to something despite the beatings not because of them. It is wiser to give someone a reputation to live up to not down to. Expect the best and that is what you will get from others and yourself.

A dear friend sent me a great quote that says what I am trying to say in English the way the French put it:

“In French you don’t say ‘I am missing you.’ You say, ‘tu me manques’ which means ‘you are missing from me.’ I love that.”

When we try so hard to believe that we are separate from God, the Universe, or others we are only trying to make ourself that missing piece and life becomes an incomplete puzzle. It is illusion but feels so real till we finally admit the truth that God is trying to tell us in everyone and everything around us that He has indeed given His very best to us and that is not some priest, prophets, poet, or politician but we who are the best of Him as He put the very best of Himself within in us, yes even in the four P(s) I just mentioned. Like Hallmark cards, He cared enough to send the very best. For God so loved the world He sent His only begotten Child and when we really believe that we, everyone of us, are that child we know everything is going to be alright, and better that alright – The Best.
