The Highest And The Best

What is it in us that makes us believe we ever have to settle for anything less, for our world, for others, or for ourselves? I have a theory and I know everyone has their own ideas and tend to blame all the “bad stuff” on the devil or someone else. Like there was this dual system – good God and bad devil, good people and bad people. I believe in Atonement, the correcting of error of duality thinking to that of singularity thinking. We are One as the Universe, God, is One. All that He/She/It is we are. There is nothing else. One of my favorite great poetic lines goes something like, “I am the captain of my fate, the author of all I survey.” I think there is a lot of truth in that statement. Just like I think there is a lot of truth in the cartoon character Pogo’s comment, “We have discovered the enemy and it is us.” Our biggest failures and most mean and hateful acts are no one’s fault but our own.

I got a note yesterday that said, “The more you take responsibility for the more power you will have.” Well, I am serving notice on myself that I take full responsibility for my actions, my intentions, my words and my world. And furthermore I promise to myself not to quit this world till I have achieved the highest and best that I can. I have allies in this undertaking, my highest and best angels. There is a famous motivational quote about Dwight L. Moody, noted Christian evangelist from the nineteenth century. As a young man he overheard someone say, “The world has yet to see what God could do through a man that was wholly yielded unto Him.” D.L. Moody replied, “I’ll be that man.”

Any man or woman who yields to the highest and best in them will see the highest and best in themselves and others. I remember a commercial slogan that once said, “Don’t fight it, surrender.” Ego’s answer is always war but the end results of war are always the same, death, destruction, and damage. Sometimes even “the winners” pay the most terrible price  for war the loss of their souls. And I am not talking about hell but a broken and crippled spirit that finds it so hard to forgive itself or others for the horrendous acts against brothers that we wrongly thought were our enemies. We have but one enemy and for that enemy and his actions we are responsible, for listening to and acting on his lies – ole ego. I will not dignify this puny rascal by capitalising his name.  Nor will I waste time fighting him for that gives him power. Ignore him and his voice and his power grows weaker and with that our real power and true voice grow stronger as we follow our highest and best angels.

The highest and the best can only be achieved when we imagine it not just for ourselves but for everyone. We get what we give. We learn what we teach. And we are bigger and better than we think. We define ourselves in this dream but we are the dreamer and only need to dream higher, bigger dreams – only the highest and the best for that is who we really are.
