Everything’s Coming Up Roses

The Chairman of the Board, the great Frank Sinatra sang in one of his later in life songs called “That’s Life” that, “Some people get their kicks by stomping on a dream.” A young man I work with loves to use the remark, “Don’t quit you day job.” whenever anyone is sharing a dream shinier that his. I am a firm believer in the law that all our biggest and brightest dreams do come true unless we give up on them. A young boy at a school sponsored event all the way in Washington, DC from a small town in Arkansas shook a young President’s hand and dreamed that he too would one day be President. That young boy never gave up on his dream and it did come true for Bill Clinton.

When the world gives you lemons, make lemonade. When the funerals of many other’s deceased dreams surround you, hold on to yours tightly and pick a bouquet of of roses for your curtain call and know that everything’s coming up roses for all who never give up hope. Never say die and you won’t, oh this body is going to keel over one day, but the spirit lives on. And those who burn the brightest in our memory are those who shined the brightest through the darkness. Darkness cannot put out the light of your dreams, no one can crush them, and even if they could, crushed roses give out a stronger scent that lingers longer.

Roses and dreams are not nearly so delicate flowers and they grow almost anywhere. I just typed in the title of this piece on Google and heard Ethel Merman belting out the song. She is a great example of a girl, woman, and granny who never gave up on her dreams of stardom and showed off her dream come true brightly on stage and screen for many years. Oh, there were probaby a million girls with prettier faces and voices but only one Ethel. She made her presence known.

The words of one her signature songs, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” are still an inspiration today. Many think inspiration is only to be found in the Bible or some other holy book but I think that inspiration is not only to be found all around us but within us. The true reason that everything’s coming up roses is that the seeds of all our biggest, brightest desires come from within, our dreams. Again for you sweet simple folk who prefer a Bible quote, “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart.” He already has. You have only to believe and they shall come true.
