The Traveler’s Inn

Blog 481- 11.30.2016

In a Facebook Teaser a couple of days ago after my usual sign off, “Your friend and fellow traveler” I continued “…nicknamed Sputnik- the word means Traveler, staying at The Travelers Inn in Mineral Point, Wisconsin… “I think it very appropriate that ole Sputnik, the Traveler, should be staying at The Travelers Inn. So I thought I’d write a blog using that as a launching pad.

I think we are all time travelers and space travelers. We do not think of it often, if at all, but we live on a beautiful blue marble that is spinning through space at an incredible rate of speed. Just the speed of the spin alone would send us hurling into outer space were it not for gravity, that heavenly super glue that holds us fast to this spinning ball called earth. As for time, that man made device for marking the duration of our journey, whether you are counting heart beats, seconds, minutes, hours, days, years centuries, or epochs it is as Einstein postulated all relative and in my slightly skewed view an illusion really for I have it on a higher authority that we are eternal beings.

It seems to me  to be self-evident that we are all travelers, coming from we know not where and headed to God knows where. Does that bother you? I say relax and enjoy the ride. The Conductor will provide any information that we require. All aboard, this train is bound for glory. In one place it is written that our life our journey is as fast as a weaver’s shuttle and yet we have all experienced at least some portions of our journey that seems to stretch out for a long time. Usually these moments are when we have a task at work that we do not particularly care for or when we are taking a hard exam or going through a tough trial. And the time that seems to fly is when we are having fun as the saying goes. But every moment is eternal if we choose to see it that way and every moment is a chance to see thru the sham of the life that seems forced upon us to the eternal life we have been given.

And sometimes even after an incredibly fun leg of our journey it is nice to have a comfortable place to rest like The Travelers Inn. Most of us from to time to time have known a loving relationship like that, in a parents arms as a small child, cuddling with a lover, or in the brief embrace of a friend, to name but a few. Eternal moments to be sure, are ones we live over and over again. Moments that not only comfort us but moments of clarity where what matters most in the journey is revealed to us. Someone has said that at the end of this journey it will not matter how much cash or treasure you have amassed nor how many kingdoms you have conquer, only how many hearts you have touched and been touched by. To love and to be loved, and it most often happens best in that order, are, I believe, the reason we chose this journey in the first place. And until we return from our travels to that First Place I am grateful for every welcoming heart and traveler’s Inn along the way.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
