Whatever your particular religious, philosophical, or political opinions there appears to be in our very polarized society two distinct and different world views. Sometime in my late thirties to mid forties I changed my views radically. I had up to that point in my life been a long time conservative Republican politically, a long time fundamentalist Christian religiously, and for lack of a more precise category philosophically I was up to that point a long time conspiracy theorist. I add that last because for me at least that was how I justified my political and religious views. I viewed the world as a great struggle between good and evil with “bad guys” everywhere always scheming and plotting the overthrow of the “good guys.”
As I typed that last bit about good guys and bad guys a line from a favorite song came to me. The song is “We Just Disagree” by Dave Mason and was popular in 1977.
“Let’s just leave it alone ’cause we can’t see eye to eye. There ain’t no good guys.
There ain’t no bad guys. There’s only you and me. And we just disagree.”
In the early 1950’s, before even I was old enough to be politically, religiously, or philosophically aware, we had the McCarthy Communist Trials, and before that in the early 1600’s in Salem, Massachusetts we had the Salem Witch Trials, and in the 1400’s the Spanish Inquisition. Recorded history is full of examples of people mistaking others, our brothers, for evil or the enemy because they disagree. Today in the U.S. we have two people who were friends not so many years ago painting each other as the adversary, the enemy, evil incarnate, all in an attempt to get the most votes. All because they disagree and have a different world view, perhaps. I threw in that “perhaps” because I am not so sure that this different world view is even real but only assumed for effect.
A very dear friend of mine who is gay posted on Social media this morning that he was really afraid that someone might make him the object of a hate crime. I commented back to him one of the Ten Intentions For A Better World that I subscribe to:
“I let go so there is room for something better to come in. I intend that I am guided, guarded, protected, and lined up with the Highest Good at all times. I trust and remain open to receive from both expected and unexpected sources. I simplify.”
I went on to tell my beloved brother to remember that this is just the dress rehearsal for the Real Production to come. I am convinced in my own heart that though you or I may lean to one of the differing world views more than the other that there is a greater overriding truth about our true identity and our reason for being here that will in the end bring us all together. God speed that day and we can speed it too to by loving the people and things we do not like till we dissolve the masks we have placed on them and on on ourselves and can see truly that we have been family all along. And that these seeming all important disagreements really don’t amount to much more than the proverbial hill of beans.
Love is truly all there is and every act, opinion, view, or position is merely an act of love or a cry for love. That is so easy to observe in the behavior of children and yet we, some if not all of us, at times seem to forget that we are all children of the same Father God and Earth Mother. Just like Jesus and President Obama we are all children of a mixed marriage, a marriage of Heaven and Earth. I am sure that comparison of Jesus and President Obama will provoke some thought on the part of my Christian conservative friends. Try to remember a time not so long ago when many people sang and I think meant it, “Give me that ole time religion, give me that ole time religion…makes me love everybody, makes me love everybody…it’s good enough for me.” Now that is a religion that even non-believer can believe in, Alfie. I believe in Love
