My Aim Is True, And Yours Is Too

Song lyrics and movies often inspire me. An Elvis Costello song from some years ago, Allison, is one such song: “Allison, I know this world is killing you. Oh, Allison, my aim is true.” When I hear the same or almost the exact words from different sources my ears perk up and I pay attention as if the Universe might be trying to tell me something important.

In a recent Sci-Fi movie, Jupiter Ascending, the hero jumps out of a space craft and dives down to a hostile planet to save the beautiful heiress. The captain of the ship he just left tells him via his ear piece that she thinks his mission fool hardy and doomed to fail but unofficially she says she thinks him a remarkable man and concludes by saying the words, “I hope your aim is true.”

I believe that each everyone of us like the young hero in Jupiter Asending comes into this seeming hostile world on a mission noble and daring and that our aim is true. Often we are distracted, disenchanted, and perhaps disillusioned but if we trust our internal guidance system our aim is still true.

We are bombarded by the advertizing world, the religious world, and the political world with basically the same message, “Look for the answer, the cure, salvation outside yourself.” Still the words of a carpenter from Gallilee long ago ring true, “The kingdom of heaven is within you.” And rest assured whatever your tragectory through this life that your aim is true. Allison, I know this world cannot kill you. Oh, Allison, I know our aim is true.
