What exactly is the perfect age to be? There is only one correct answer – the age you are. Every time I get to have a conversation with a small child I always ask, “And how old are you?” My pat reply no matter what age they answer is always the same, “That is a wonderful age to be.” How sad for the child who wishes his or her life away longing to be older or for the older person doing really the same thing wishing to be young again.
A few years back Five For Fighting recorded a wonderful song with this lyric:
“I’m 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I’m just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are.
15 there’s still time for you
Time to buy and time to chose
And time to lose yourself
Within a morning star.
15 I’m alright with you
15, there’s never a wish
Better than this
When you’ve only got 100 years to live.”
The song goes on through several verses to picture life at the ages all the way up to ninety nine. Time was when three score and ten was a full life. A full life is a life fully lived.
When I was a young boy I thought 15 would be the perfect aged to be but I have learned better. For me it is 65 and in a few months if all goes according to plan it will be 66 and on and on till at least 105 if I am allowed.
Some do not get 100 years and some get a few more but that really doesn’t matter. What matters is that you make the most of each year and each day you get. And that is why I try to remind children and oldsters of every age that the best age to be is the age you are.
