Is Your Cup Half Empty?

Blog 374 – 08.14.2016

Most everyone has heard of the two views of life expressed by how one views a cup that is filled to the half way mark – half empty or half full.  If you have a positive outlook on life you see the cup as half full and if you have a negative outlook you see it has half empty. How do you see the cup?

My dear departed mother, bless her heart, seemed to alway see the dark side so she saw the cup as half empty. Fact is I think she needed a different category, “Somebody stole my cup.” My mom and dad were married for forty seven years when my dad died. All those years mom blamed dad for her unhappiness. The last time I saw them before dad died she was telling me she just didn’t know how much more of him she could take. Oddly enough after he died she was angry at him for leaving her. Three years after his death she took her own life. The empty hole that was her life had gotten so deep and dark that she saw no other way out. She was physically healthy, her lovely home was paid off as was her new car, but she was not happy.

Another David once wrote, “…my cup runneth over”. And his was not always an easy life but he had a view askew from the way most people see the cup, half full, half empty or even stollen. David knew his cup was continually being filled by God, by the Universe. In the same book where you can find David’s poems and a detailed account of his roll-a-coaster life you can also find a promise. Unscrupulous men throughout the centuries have beaten it as a drum to get money mostly for themselves but I think it means way more that fund raising. The promise says, “Prove me if I will not pour you out a blessing you cannot contain.” The con men emphasize the words before the promise about giving a tenth or tithe. But God or the Universe doesn’t care as much about building churches or hospitals or even helping Jerry’s kids as he does teaching us how to be happy.

How? You say. Simple says I. To get and stay under the spout where the blessings come out, ask for what you want and believe it is yours and you shall have it. Believing is what primes the pump.  Jesus said to the young rich man, “Go and sell all that you have and give it away and follow me.” The simple act of giving, and it doesn’t have to be everything, is how we show our faith in the Universe to keep the promise. If you believe the cup is empty or half empty it is. You are the cup. Pour yourself out on others and see if you will not be refilled to overflowing. You cannot out give God, the Universe. If you’d like to know more about how to get everything you every wanted just ask. Tune in next Saturday for The Great Lie.
