No Night So Long

I get great inspiration from music and being a poet words set to music get me going the most. I do a lot of driving in my work and have several hundred songs that I listen to over and over again. One of those songs, No Night So Long, sung by Dionne Warwick has these words for a chorus:

“No night so long
That you can’t find the day
No day so wrong
That you can’t find a way.

Call on me like you used to do
I can still show you who you are.”

Wow, those words are so powerful and combined with a beautiful score and Dionne’s voice they really move me. Dionne’s niece Whitney Houston had a powerful voice too.

No matter how dark the night the day will come and no matter how hard the day you can find the way. The most thrilling line in the chorus to me is “Call on me like you used to do. I can still show you who you are.”

As a small boy I was taught to believe that a great invisible friend watched over me and cared about me. In mid-life I rejected that belief and tried to believe I was on my own. After almost twenty years of trying to go it on my own I came back to a belief in a higher power. Not the same belief I had as a child nor even as an adult but a belief in the Whole of which I am a part with everyone and everything. I have an important role to play in the Whole as all of us do.

I have said before that I think every love song is but an echo of the One Love Song, the song of the lost beloved seeking the beloved to be One with the beloved, the One who alone can show you who you are.
