(Excerpt from the book, Emily – The Little a Girl Who Sang Her Song To Anyone Who Came Along)

Episode 22

I recently saw the remake of the little orphan Annie story where Annie is played by a beautiful and talented young black girl and the rich guy who adopts her is played by Jamie Foxx. I thought it was wonderful and of course the music was fabulous.

When Emily was three her mother kept a pretty little blond girl named Tiffany. Tiff and Em were fast friends. Tiffany’s Mom, Buffy, knew the girls would love the Annie movie that had just been released at that time so she got tickets for the three of them. We were thrilled for Emily as she went out on one of the first of many Girls Nights Out.

The girls carried signs to the movie that Emily’s Mom had made for them. A picture of Emily all dressed up for the movie and holding her Annie sign was in Emily’s Lost Little Book. The girls, of course, had to have the album soundtrack and Emily listened to hers so many times we all memorized the songs. I still catch myself humming and singing to myself the words:

The sun will come out tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
There’ll be sun.
(And the oh so touching:)
They’ll still be calling me, Baby,
maybe.

As an aside here, I received an email from my brother yesterday and he addressed it to “Baby” and I ended my reply with, “Your loving brother, David (alias Baby). See Episode 3 for an explanation.

If you have not seen the latest incarnation of the Annie story please do and take your family and make the soundtrack a part of your lives as well. And remember no matter how dark life may look at times I have it on two off the highest authorities, my darling Emily and Annie that the sun will indeed come out tomorrow.

Your friend and fellow traveler, Emily’s Dad
