Living In The Moment

Blog 308 – 06.01.2016

For years I have read about people who were able to pray or meditate for hours at a time and how much peace of mind they found in these practices. I have never considered myself having OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) or ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) because things I enjoy like watching movies, reading, writing, walking, or fishing I can do for hours on end without becoming bored or distracted. But being quiet and still and trying to count my blessings or recite a long list of requests for others or even my own wish list (if that is even what prayer is) or putting my mind completely out of gear, focusing on my breath or a note or humming
sound (if that is what meditating really is) have always been hard for me.
I read some time back that eternity is in a moment and that that moment is the eternal now. Life gets a lot easier to live if and when we can focus on the moments and live them completely. Carpe Diem means “seize the day” but I submit that even a day is too much time to get your mind around hence Jesus remark, “Sufficient to the day is the evil there of.” with which he concluded his remarks about not worrying (taking thought) but living one day at a time.
I do not personally buy in to the concept of multitasking. To me each task is done better and more completely if we give it our undivided attention. I wrote a piece some time back that the secret to being a great lover or really good at anything is a matter of focus and attention. The best lived lives I think are lived out loud and on purpose with an attention to details and great focus on the moments.
I often quote a plaque that my mother had on the wall of her living room for many years. It read, “Just one life, ’twill soon be past, and only what’s done for Christ shall last.” I see that a bit different and some of my Christian friends will be offended by my next lines. But before I add my twist on the words of that plaque let me quote another line from Jesus. He said, in one place, “Blessed (or happy) is he who is not offended in me.”
I agree that life is short and that it will soon be past but I think the last part might better read “only what is done as Christ (the Annointed) shall last. There is so much diversity in the Universe and though God/Nature/The Universe stamps His or Her image/likeness in all of creation every incarnation of the Divine or God spark is unique and magnificently individual while fitting perfectly into the whole. Whoa, that is some heavy thinking and I wanted to keep it light today.
Take a moment to think about one of the happiest moments of your life. If you look at that moment closely you will see how you were truly focused and quite literally wrung every drop of life of being out of it. From moment to moment every moment has that potential because the real potential is in us to find eternity in a moment. I love the expression, “In the twinkling of an eye.” That fast your life can change. Make it for the better, for the best.
