Nature vs Nurture, Destiny vs Decision

Blog 280 – 4.25.2016

Our Dualistic Western way of thinking sets us up, I think, for a lot of false arguments. The famous philosopher and deep thinker, Forest Gump remarked, “I don’t know if we have a destiny like Lieutenant Dan says or if we are just floating on a breeze like Mama says. But I think it’s both, at the same time.” And if it is possible that Fate or Destiny is also mixed up with elements of randomness and decision then is it not also possible that the other versus in the title of today’s article could also be both and not either/or?

Nurture versus Nature- it has been argued for a long time which has the most bearing on how a child turns out. Some believe a child properly reared can never depart from those teachings. Others believe it is all genetics or predetermined. I think it is probably both with a lot of self determination included. We are neither victims of nature nor of nurture. The choices we make can override either or both. We are more than conquerors through … (You Christians thought I was going to say Christ as the Classic rendering of that Bible verse says. Instead I will say – We are more than winners because of Who and Whose we are. We were made in His likeness, created in His image to serve as vessels, to allow the God of all the Universe to live out every possibility in and through us.

And the possibilities are endless and unbounded. In our ever expanding Universe and ever growing developing Mind we can be and we can do anything. The old and terribly outdated saying,  “The sky is the limit.” Must be replaced with “There are no limits but those we impose by our own self limiting beliefs and thoughts.

In the science fiction movie series Terminator the original premise was that both Cyberdyne Technologies, the evil self aware computer, and The Resistance, humans not wanting to be dominated by machines both travel back in time to change the past to their side’s advantage in the future. One of the classic lines from the series is, “There is no fate but what we make.” I have a sneaky suspicion that when we peal away all the layers of the onion that is the divine we will find that the secret identity of the One behind the curtain, is no secret at all. We have found clues like bread crumbs all along the path that leads home.

There is “No, no two.” But only One Love and we are He and He is us. The God of the Universe who is all in all is in us, is us and we are in Him and are Him or Her. The God of all glory is in us to will and to do as He purposes, as we, the two who are truly One, purpose.
