The Sonship

Blog 239 – 02.26.2016

I have spent a lot of time thinking about one of my favorite of Jesus parables, stories, The Prodigal Son. I have heard countless sermons based on that story and most I think miss the point. The real point of the story and I think the real mission of Jesus was not to set up a church or a religion but to remind his brothers and sisters Who and Whose they truly are. I do not believe that boy who chose to get his share of the inheritance early and go off to the big city and waste it all ever for even a moment lost his relationship to his father. The story says that when he was out of money, out of friends, and barely getting enough to eat and even having to share the food of the pigs he was feeding that “he came to himself.” He remembered Who and Whose he was and headed home practicing his spill, “I have screwed up, Dad, big time, and do not deserve to be called your son anymore. Please make me one of your hired hands.” The part I think so many miss is that Dad wasn’t hearing a word of it. He said, “My son is home, get a robe, get a ring, let’s party.” My brother and sister, wherever your journey has taken you or whatever you’ve gotten yourself into, you have only to remember Who and Whose you truly are and turn your heart toward Home and you are there because you are loved so much that nothing you could ever do or say could change Who and Whose you are.

THE SONSHIP

By David J. White

Time is short still some would fold time

To hasten what future awaits mankind.

“As it was in the beginning is now and forever more”

Thus shall man find what he so tried to ignore.

Atonement was in the beginning

Is now and ever shall be

One Son the Father created

And that one Son are we.

We gather in the Sonship

For our journey home

We are not allowed to forget Who and Whose we are

No matter how far we roam.

By His Sweet Spirit we are guided

Ever onward, ever home

And joy of joys where ever we look are brothers

For we cannot go home alone.
