One of my favorite Frank Sinatra songs is,
I’ve Got The World On A String. Here are some of the lyrics:
I’ve got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life,
I’m in love.
… I can make the rain go
Any time I move my finger…
… I’d be a silly so in so
If I should ever let it go.
I remember several years ago when I first began my quest in mid life to become, what they called in psychology class in Bible College when I was a young man, “self actualized” that I began by saying a mantra out loud to myself several times a day, “I am the Captain of my fate the Master of all I survey.”
I believe the first step to self awareness, knowing Who and Whose you truly are, is to accept responsibility for your life and to realize that you are where you are because you alone chose to be there. The Prodigal son when he hit rock bottom, came to himself, realized where he was, accepted responsibility and got up off his ass and started moving in the right direction. And that right direction for him and all of us is the same. It is Home. In the haunting love song by Randy Newman, Feels Like Home, the chorus goes:
Feels like home to me,
Feels like home to me,
Feels like I’m all the way back
Where I come from.
Feels like home to me,
Feels like home to me
Feels like I’m all the way back
Where I belong.
I submit to you that we do not well remember the first part of our journey. The part about leaving Home on an adventure. But to make sure that we eventually make our way Home God has planted a part of Himself in our heart as a sort of homing beacon to guide us Home to Him. Oh, you can get a glimpse of Him in other sweet hearts but till you find Him in your own heart you’ve got a long way to go. And somebody else has got a hold of that string.
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
