Look Into Your Heart

Blog 203 – 01.08.2016

I started to title this piece Open Up Your Heart as a follow up to yesterday’s blog title but then I remembered the words to the chorus I quoted said “Look into your heart and you’ll find love, love, love.” Someone on social media recently wrote that they had a problem with God not being capitalized. I don’t have a problem with my name being typed in all lower case or all caps for that matter. It seemed a case of majoring on minors to me.

The three most popular words in the English language, at least they were some years ago, are heaven, home, and mother. And whether the first letter is capitalized or not the importance those words have to us is still the same. I feel compelled to share a funny story from the TV Game Show Family Feud. The question posed to the audience was, “What big thing does a woman have that gives her power over men.” The top answer was “jugs” and the fifth ranking answer was a equally cute name for a woman’s bottom. Both of which hold a special place in many men’s hearts and give women so endowed power over many men.

A credit card commercial asks the question, “What’s in your wallet?” But the question I would ask is have you looked lately into your heart?” What do you treasure most in your heart of hearts?”  When I was a young boy I remember hearing on the radio each morning a song that said, “Into my heart, into my heart, come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Come in today. Come in to stay. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus.” I have come to believe that this sweet sentiment is logistically a little off. To ask God to come into your heart is a logistic impossibility. Why, you ask. Because God/the Universe being omnipresent, everywhere, is already there. Furthermore I believe there is a throne in every human heart where God reigns supreme, not just in “born again believers” hearts but every heart no matter their race, color, creed or sexual preference. Now there is at least one pretender to that throne – little ego. Yes, and we may pretend to worship a host of other gods but if they are real they too are a part of the One as we are.

A favorite quote of mine is, “In Him we live, and move, and have or being.” It is, I think equally true that He lives, and moves, and has His being in us. Look into your heart and you’ll find love, love, love. Because Love, God, is all there is and apart from Him nothing exists. Woe, that is pretty heavy, Dave. Yeah, maybe but it is ours this exceeding weight of glory. Cross my heart and hope to die.

David White
