Seek And You Will Find

Blog 173 – 11.30.15

As one of my favorite months of the year comes to an end I would like to encourage all you seekers out there. Follow your desires for at the end of every desire you will find the Object of Your Desire. “Seek and you will find” is how the Bible verse goes and it continues “and you shall find me when you shall look for me with your whole heart.”

For those who seek pleasure He promises rivers of pleasure. For those who seek treasure He promises a city of gold. For the homeless who seek a home He promises a mansion on a hilltop. For those who see themselves as orphans with no family He promises the biggest most loving family ever was. He can promise all these things because He is all these things. Indeed He is the true object of all our desires and so can say with certainty, “Delight yourself in the LORD and he shall give your the desires of your heart.”

I have quoted several time the lyrics of a Christian song, “He was there all the time. He was there all the time, waiting patiently in line. He was there all the time.” God is the perfect lover and He is prepare to wait till we try everything else. I can hear his voice in the haunting love ballad sung by Lou Rawls, “You’ll never find, as long as you live, someone to love you tender like I do. And I’m not bragging on myself, Baby, but there’s no one else, no one else.” For a long time I have come to see every love song as the One True Love Song.

Gladys Knight and the Pips had another such love song in the seventies that had these loving words, “If anyone should ever write my life story, for whatever reason there might be. You’d be there in every line of pain and glory ’cause you’re the best thing that ever happened to me.” I love a good love story as much as anyone else. But no personality no matter how well developed not even Jesus himself can totally fill the bill. There is only One and He is not Three. God, the Universe, is the only One who can satisfy. A preacher who had smoked as a young man mentioned more than once the old Winston cigarette slogan, “Winston Satisfies.” The preacher said if that were true they would not have had to put twenty in a pack. Only one would satisfy. Only One can satisfy.

Only God can satisfy the deep desire in us. Like calls to like. In the creation story we are told that God marched every creature before the man to name and there was found no counter part for man. And the story goes God caused a deep sleep to come upon the man and He took one of his ribs and fashioned for him a helpmeet. What if it has all been a dream and we are all still sleeping. Further along in the dream God separated a people unto Himself allowed them to be made slaves so He could deliver them in a mighty way and cause the enemies in the land He had promised them to be defeated. And when  He gave them peace they begged him for a king. Much later even Jesus came to be The King of the Jews.

But suppose that hole we feel in our hearts could never be completely filled by a woman or a man and that the desire to have a king could never be completely filled by but One Candidate and He was there all the time waiting patiently in line. Seek and you will find the One you have been looking for all you life.
