Heroes

Blog 155 – 11.5.15

I once thought it was my job or purpose in life to save the world. A few years ago NBC had a popular series called Heroes about people with special powers that used those powers to save the world. This season the series has been rebooted and is called Heroes Reborn. Like many of you I grew up with Superman and a whole host of super heroes and heroines. Jesus, himself, is a super hero or a super star to a great many of us.

I marvel that his story is so similar to that of Superman. Both their father’s sent them to earth to save the world. And both were given super powers. One wore the disguise of a mild mannered reporter the other a mild mannered carpenter turned preacher.

I no longer believe it is my job or purpose to save the world or to change anyone not even myself. I think the popular three fold sentiment you see on plaques says best what I see as my purpose in life:

To Live
To Laugh
To Love

Whitney Houston sang:

Everybody’s looking for a hero
I never found anyone to fulfill my need
Till I learned to depend on me.

I believe that the God of all the Universe lives in each one of us and that we are everyone of us super heroes capable of great miracles of love and courage. Sadly most of us have bought into our own cover story, and believe our own disguise. We are agents of our Father sent here not so much to save the world or anybody in particular as to enjoy this life in all its fullness and to be gently awakened to the knowledge of our own divinity. Pretty cool story. Clark, the boy Buddah, nor even Jesus have a better story than ours for each of our stories is as theirs really His Story.

Some one said in a critical way, “He always makes himself out to be the hero in all of his stories.” I lovingly replied, “Don’t we all.”
