Blog 153 – 11.3.15
I was taught from a boy to believe that saying “God damn” was worse than even saying the F word. There is a verse, there is always a verse, that people misquote, misunderstand, or misinterpret. And I quote from the King James Version, the one that Moses used (That is a joke – lighten up) “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD Thy God in vain.” God is not God’s name. God is a title. Moses asked God in the burning bush what his name was and God replied, “My name is, ‘I am that I am.” Sounds a lot like Popeye to me who often said, “I am what I am.” Jesus got himself crucified for ticking off the Jewish council for his answer to their question, “Are you the son of God?” Jesus replied, “I am.” They thought it blasphemy to use God’s personal private name. I think I might have mentioned previously that the scribes, the folks who copied the scriptures, reverenced God’s name so much they didn’t write it and forgot the vowels till all they had left of it was YHVH or some such which The King James Version garbled to Jehovah but Bible scholars think is more probably Yeshuwah or something like that.
So, oh wise David, what is using God’s name in vain? First let me say it is perfectly alright for a child to use his or her father’s name. A loving father as our heavenly or perfect father is has no bastard children. Having said that what constitutes using God’s name, I Am, in vain. Here are three examples.
I am so stupid.
I am unworthy.
I am unable.
God is all wise.
God is worthy of love, praise, and honor.
God is able.
When you say the first three things or all the many variation of them you are, my friend (and sibling in the truest sense(using our Father’s name, your rightful name, in vain. Descartes, the great philosopher said, “I think, therefore I am.” Proverbs says, “As a man thinks in his heart so is he.”
So let me say those three things correctly and I hope we will all stop using God’s name in vain. Cuss, Goddamnit, all you like but get these three things right and say them with me out loud right now.
I am all knowing. (I just have to ask Dad.)
I am worthy of love, happiness, praise, and honor ( I am my Father’s beloved child every bit as much as Jesus)
I am able. (For God is able and I am more than a conquer through Him that loves me and is in me to will and to do as he pleases.)
Now some of you church folks might be ready to condemn me for heresy but before you do remember the old poem:
“He drew a circle that left me out
A heretic a thing to flout
But love and I with a will to win
We drew a circle that took him him.”
There is no one outside the Great Circle that is “I Am” for God is all in all. Enjoy your place and privilege. Namaste, “I bow to the divinity in you.”
Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
