Many people are dissatisfied with what the see in the mirror. I saw a little cartoon where one little girl was saying to another in front of a bathroom scale, “Don’t step on that. It will make you cry? I have mentioned several times a song from the seventies called Mirror, Mirror where Evie sings “Till you find him in the mirror you’ve got a long way to go.”
Several years ago I read two rather long books that claim to be inspired by Jesus. And I am not talking about one of my many Mexican friends who have the same name but pronounce it Hay Suice. Jesus of Nazareth, the one many folks believe was God’s one and only son. He, for the record, never claimed that but called his buddies and all of us brothers. He also called himself The Son of Man most of the time. I love our President Barak Obama. It disturbs me that so many people do not like him mainly because he is white but also black. Like Jesus H. Christ, Barak H. Obama is of mixed parentage. At least if you believe that far out story. And, no, I am not talking about Barak’s birth certificate, by the way there were some arguments about where Jesus was born too. Some said he couldn’t be the Messiah because he was from Nazareth. He couldn’t prove he was born in Bethlehem because he couldn’t produce a birth certificate. Anyway the wild story I was referring to is the virgin birth story which has it’s origins in a mistake in translating a word in an Old Testament prophesy about the predicted Messiah being born of a Young Woman not a Virgin. To my knowledge the Universe makes babies without exception using eggs and sperm. If you want to believe a Ghost even a Holy one got a young Jewish Girl pregnant go ahead but I’d like you to consider buying some ocean front property I have in Arizona and yes I will throw the golden gate in free.
I am not telling you what to think just trying to encourage you to think for yourself. The guys who wrote the earliest of the gospels were recording those stories almost a hundred years after the events supposedly happened and it is evident they were salesmen, selling a product. Look at what we’ve done to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in a couple of hundred years. Does anyone really believe that George never told a lie or that Abe was a Vampire Slayer? Now that was a great story and it makes some sense of why the South kept millions of people enslaved to feed on their blood or was it just to keep some plantation owners rich? At any rate Abe in the movie version of his life wields a mean axe taking out vampires. Stories and legends grow but usually have some basis in truth.
But back to the two more recent books I read that purport (big word meaning present themselves to be) actually dictated by Jesus of Nazareth. The titles are A Course In Miracles and The Way Of Mastery. When you get to the place in your life where you are really looking for answers about Who you really are I recommend these books. The Evie song I mentioned above also says, “You can find Him in the Bible and many churches that I know but till you find Him in the mirror you’ve got a long way to go.” I am convinced when we truly learn Who we are that Life itself opens up to us. I don’t think Jesus came to make Christmas or Easter special days. I don’t think he had to die for our sins. I don’t even think he ever intended to start a church. I think his primary mission and message (which was co-opted and garbled) was to remind us Who we truly are. He was not alone for spiritual leaders of every stripe have been trying to do well since this adventure began. If you listen you can here it even in the wind.
To paraphrase the High Flight poem and combine it with Evie’s song:
Look in the mirror
Put out your hand
And touch the face of God.
Nice disguise, even had me fooled for a minute. We’re talking relative time. When that Cat is really out of the bag there’s going to be Heaven to pay.
