The Golden Age

Blog 135 – 10.9.15

It is a concept that has haunted man’s imagination for most if not all of his recorded history on this planet. As a teen-age I was thrilled as many of my counterparts were saying that we might indeed be on the brink of The Age of Aquarius, a new and golden Age of Enlightenment, Love, and Prosperity for all as we truly learned to live by the Golden Rule and shared this wonderful world and everything in it.

Alas, my generation has not ushered in The Age of Aquarius but sold out to a sadly limited view of family as, “Me and mine.” And mostly fallen victim to the ad-hucksters, the Mad Men who would make and keep us all “consumers” till we completely consume and destroy this wonderful world we have been given. It is not progress to trade away all the natural beauty for concrete and as the song says, “Boxes made of ticky tacky.” Or as another song says so well, “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

This is a Golden Age alright but is all about the gold. If you have read much of my writing you know I quote the Bible a lot but also song lyrics. I find it amazing the way words put to melody can slip right past the critical mind that stands guard to keep us from thinking new thoughts and go right to the heart. Such words I heard in a love song, “I was imprisoned by the power of gold. With one fell stroke you set me free.” What has the power to deliver us from the prison of capitalism, where we put a price on everything, and everything seems to be about making a profit? The Bible asks a similar question, “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul?” And again another song lyric, “Is there any hope for the hopeless sinner who would hurt all mankind just to ease his soul?”

I heard recently of a company exec who received a long prison sentence for ordering the shipment of batch of peanut butter known to be tainted with salmonella bacteria which resulted in several deaths. Profit at any price has people selling their soul to stack up a bigger pile of gold.

But I still believe a new day is coming. The shift has already occurred. The Age of Aquarius is upon us. “What the world needs now is love, sweet love. No, not just for some, but for everyone.”
