Do You Believe In Magic?

Blog 117 – 9.16.15

A group called of all things The Loving Spoonful recorded a love ballad in my youth that had the following words:

Do you believe in magic
In a young girl’s heart
How the magic can free you
Whenever it starts?

I believe in magic or miracles. Just yesterday I read an excellent quote, “If you have never seen a miracle you just have not been paying attention.” There is magic in every young girl’s heart and young boy’s. No matter your age the magic, the miracle, is within you.

Years ago when I was studying religions, Roman Catholicism in particular, I read that the Latin words the priest says over the bread and wine before they are magically or miraculously turned into the literal body and blood of Christ are “Hoc est poc est.” it means, “this is my body” Jesus words as he broke the bread. Hocus-pocus is what magicians say before they pull a rabbit out of a hat or perform other fetes of magic. Another word they sometimes use is Abracadabra. I am told it is an Aramaic term that translates, “I will create as I speak.” That sounds a lot like The Great Magician in the first chapter of the first book of the Bible who spoke everything into being out of nothing or thin air as we would say.

Feel like performing a little magic? Try this, think of a number between one and ten. No, I’m not going to let you off that easy. I want you to try something a bit harder. I created a rainbow once. I was a young believer in the U.S. Army trying to convince an atheist friend that my God was real and would answer one of my prayers to prove Himself to my friend. I  told Hutch I would ask God to put a rain bow in the sky as proof He could do it and would do it just because I asked. And it happened. Whew, there were a few moments when I told myself that maybe I was being presumptuous. I have come to believe that I thought that rainbow in the sky. I visualized it in my mind and added the emotions of excitement and gratitude – both sure fire ways to draw what you want out of the great grab bag that quantum physicists call the Field of Potentiality or the Field of Infinity Possibilities. Layman like myself just call it the Universe, all there is, ever was, or ever could be – God for you more orthodox folks.

But for your home work in quantum physics today I want you to hold a singular thought in you mind. Something you want to come to you within the next twenty four hours in such a miraculous or magical way that you will take it as proof you created it yourself with your mind. Scared? Think I’m being silly? Not for a moment. I believe the word that says, “You have not because you asked not…” Some of you will say but it goes on to say, “or because you ask amiss.” But I think that even that seeming disclaimer is talking about ruining or sabotaging your own requests, prayers, magic tricks or creations by allowing doubt or duplicity to undermine your desire. It is written, “Delight thyself in the LORD ( Ole U or FP or FIP) and he will give you the desires of your heart.” But let faith have its perfect work or more scientifically, “The proof is in the putting.”

In twenty four hours you will have the proof of this theory or I should be receiving lots of Rotten Tomato Comments on my blog.

I hope to hear from you one way or the other.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White
