One of my favorite songs about teenaged passion has the stirring lines:
In the back of my sixty Chevy,
Working on mysteries without any clues,
Working on those night moves.
If I now have your attention I would like to say there are plenty of clues to the great mysteries of life. Though sex is one of the more interesting ones we can talk about that off line if you like. As the title of this piece implies I want to discuss some clues to Who and some clues to You.
One of my favorite Westerns is the movie True Grit. I like both the John Wayne version and the more recent version starring Jeff Bridges as Marshall Rooster Cogburn. It is a great book, by the way, and the newer movie has more of the story than the older movie but I think both are excellent.
The idea for this piece came to me as I was replaying in my mind the scene where Rooster and the Texas Ranger have told the ferryman that Mattie is a runaway to keep her from following them on the arduous journey into the Indian Nation to capture Chaney, the man who killed Mattie’s father and a Senator in Texas. When the ferryman tries to take Mattie back to town to the sheriff she gets away from him and rides her horse, Little Blackie, into the wide river and the horse with Mattie on his back swims across to the other bank. Rooster looks off the ferry boat at the brave and feisty young Mattie and says, “By God she reminds me of me” with a big smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye.
That my friends is a clue to Who you truly are when you see yourself in someone else. It is a life long quest for most of us “finding out Who and Whose we truly are.” We see our higher self, or God, in others and find them easiest to love. The things we like least in ourself we see in others also, often more readily than we see it in ourselves. These people are our biggest problems but really it is we ourself that is our biggest problem. When we truly learn to love ourself, warts and all, we find it so much easier to love even those folks who were so hard to love. It was us all the time.
The clues to Who you truly are are all around you. Just pay attention to them and what a much more exiting and fun adventure this life can be.
Your friend and fellow traveler, just holding the mirror for you Handsome and for you, Beautiful,
David white
