I Have Slipped The Surly Bonds of Earth

Shedding this mortal coil, there are so many poetic ways to express the desire within the human soul, spirit, or psyche to transcend the limits of time and space and of this body that holds us to the ground keeping us in one place.

It is my humble opinion that even that great drive in most of us for physical intimacy, sex, is a part of this overarching desire be free from our earthly bounds. The title from today’s article comes from the poem High Flight. It begins:

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of
earth,
And danced the skies on laughter silvered
wings,
Wheeled and swung and soared,
And done a hundred things
You have not dreamed.

Oh, contrare, my pilot friend, for I have flown as we all have on many flights of fancy and slipped the confined our our bodies, of earth and have dreamed. The limits of the body need not be the limits of the human heart or mind. Have you never pictured in your minds eye soaring with the birds, riding wind currents and gliding along? We did when we were children. Remember coasting down a hill on your bike, in a wagon, in a soap box racer, or on a sledge in the snow with the wind in your face imagining yourself flying. Some people have a fear of flying I always was more afraid of being stuck in one place on the ground. I remember telling my mom as a young teenager that I often felt like a bird being forced to walk when I knew I was meant to fly.

I think, and call me crazy – you won’t be the first nor the last I am sure, that there lives in each one of us a magnificent being just itching to spread its wings and soar. The almost incredible boredom or the misguided and misplaced feeling we feel often is because we are not awakening to our highest potential but have settled for small and mundane lives. Don’t get me wrong I don’t for one minute think that everyone has to wander the world like a nomad, as I choose to do, to fulfill their dreams. But if you are not happy where you are – move. Even if it is just to go for a walk to get your bearings.

Walking is a great time to think, to get in touch with God, yourself, to get a clue. One if not the most difficult questions most of us face is:,”What do I really want?” With so many salesmen, politicians, and yes religious folk trying to tell us what we really want it can be confusing and really noisy in our heads with all those other voices. The Ad Men alone fill our heads with jingles, pictures, and slogans. I remember sometime back Burger King had a picture of Whopper, fries, and Coke with the voice over “Aren’t you hungry?” Well, I wasn’t before but I am now.

A bee, a creature that according to the laws of aerodynamics is incapable of flight, guess bees never studied law, is said to circle and circle till they figure out which where they want to go then they make a bee line, or straight course, to that destination. Most of us are like that too. Some of us take most of a lifetime to figure out what we want and where we really want to be.

Haven’t made your mind up yet? No problem those big strong wings of yours are just waiting on flight clearance and for you to pick a destination or goal. Your wings are ready, willing, and able to take you wherever you want to go. Happy flying.

Your friend and fellow traveler, and wing man,
David White
