Playing By The Rules

Blog 94 – 8.14.15

We have been taught that the only way to win is to play by the rules but who writes the rules and why? I have previously written about the one rule in the creation story and what I think was the true story behind that rule. But what of all the seemingly endless list of rules.

If you have read any of my blogs before this you already know I have what I call a slightly skewed view. I had a dear friend years ago who would use the expression, “Let me play devil’s advocate.” What he meant by that was let’s look at the other side or at the issue from another angle. We in this country have been raised to believe that the party line is always right and that The American Way is superior in every regard almost as if we can do no wrong. A line from an arrogant resigned President in which he refused to own up to his mistake of lying to Congress and the country says it all. Former President Richard Nixon said to David Frost in an interview years after Watergate when asked if he when President broke the law, “If the President does it, it must be legal.”

There you have what I think is the problem with the rules. The rules are never for the rich, the powerful, the beautiful, the elite. They are in most cases written to benefit them and minimized the lives of the rest of us. The Communist Manifesto says, “Religion is the opiate of the people.” The Fundamentalists in this country have a vehement hatred for Communism. The early Christian church practiced an early form of communism, “they had all things in common” but Ego’s primary religion of, “my pile has to be bigger than everybody else’s” won out and the history of Christianity followed the same tradition of haves and have nots, kings and subjects, then democracy and communism where some few are always more “equal” than the others.

Does the handful that control most of the wealth, resources, and power think they can forever fool the rest of us. They didn’t fool Jesus. “Let that mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus…” Thomas Jefferson believed there would have to be a revolution every twenty years or so for the people to truly maintain control of the government. Look at our tax code if you think ole Tom wrong. It is a maze of rules all written by the rich for the rich to make sure the rich pay the least amount of taxes while the poorer people pay the most. The rich man’s solution to the problem of taxes and balancing the Federal budget is always the same:

•  A flat sales tax of ten percent so
the poor who buy everything will
shoulder all the tax burden.

•  Do away with all entitlements, i.e.
Social Security, Medicare, etc. so there
is no safety net for anyone else but the
rich

•  Write more rules to benefit rich
corporations, like the banking, oil and
gas industry, medical, drug, insurance,
etc. so they get a bigger and bigger
piece of the pie and the little guy gets
fewer and fewer crumbs. That is the
famous trickle down theory and all that
trickles down is not something you
want to talk about.

•  Convince everyone to invest their
savings in 401K type plans where
those monies can be stollen as easily
as the a Teamsters’ pension plan was
several times, the Enron employee
company stock investments, and the
little investors who lost as much as half
of their 401K’s worth in the recent Bail
Out Debacle.

•   And if stealing the little guys money
in the above ways was not enough we
can always start another war to make
the rich richer and rob the little guy of
even his and her children.

I challenge you to show me a law ever written that was not written to benefit somebody over somebody else. Religions are mostly about guilt and a priesthood where a few get paid to intercede for others. And look at our political representatives most of whom become wealthy in office. Most of the rules they write do not pass muster with the one and only rule that works for everyone: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

But be encouraged, people are waking up, seeing through the lies of those who would continue to make merchandise of their brothers, keep us “wage slaves”, or addicted to their drugs, legal or illegal, or religion or some other belief that teaches some people are special or “chosen” and deserving of a bigger piece of the pie.  Awake oh sleeper and arise. A new day is dawning.

Your friend and fellow traveler,
David White

Disclaimer: These are just my opinions and I could be wrong but provoking thought is one of my goals. And I do realize that often when some rich people piles get embarrassingly high they feel compelled to give some back. There is no shortage of wealth in this world but more than enough for all to share. The haves live in fear in their gated communities that the have nots will realize the inequity of our system and tear it down as perhaps they should. The revolution could happen in our hearts if we let it and not in the streets.
