“Isn’t it rich? Aren’t we a pair? You on the ground me in midair.” Richard Sondheim’s haunting words and melody struck a chord in most of us the first time we heard them. I think we have all of us experienced the heartbreak of a love experience where it seems our timing is just off.
Many of us found our first great hurt in a young love that seemed to just come too soon before we were ready and then the opportunity for whatever reason passed. Sad it truly is for people who believe that they have met and lost the “great love of their life.” I saw a picture of a plant sprouting on Facebook yesterday with the words:
I am grateful for reincarnation.
I do not have to waste time
wishing I was 21 again.
Thank you Universe.

I am not sure what I believe about reincarnation but I do think life goes on and I often have the sneaky suspicion that I have been here before, maybe several times, and in several shapes. A great line attributed to Shakespeare and whether he wrote it or stole it, it is still great stuff says, “There are worlds not dreamt of in your philosophy.” I think many of us often find we have out grown our ideas, beliefs, philosophies and need to open our minds and hearts to bigger possibilities.
I think we underestimate the elasticity (sorry about the fancy word – I should have said stretch ability) of the human heart and mind. And perhaps that is because we also come with a divine heart and mind that has an endless capacity to grow. A line from an Indigo Girls song says, “We’re better off for all that we let in.” Everything and everyone we let in to our heart and mind expands us. We, like God/The Universe are ever expanding. Sometimes that feeling that our heart is breaking or that our mind is about to explode from over load is just “growing pains.”
What does all that have to do with bringing in the clowns? Well, in my view, there is no matter whether our timing seems off or not a party all the time for them that choose. So bring in the clowns, there ought to be clowns. If today is not your birthday it is somebody’s so in the very wise words of Ted and Bill from their Excellent Adventure, “Party on, Dude.”
Your friend, fellow traveler, and some time. Dude,
