There is a great line in Frank Capra’s classic film It’s A Wonderful Life where Jimmy Stewart says his favorite sounds are boat and train whistles and airplane engines. His character wants desperately to see the world inspired by the National Geographic Magazines he had read and loved as a boy. I like George Bailey, Jimmy’s character in the movie, get excited by boats, planes, and trains and also automobiles.
Another favorite movie of mine Trains, Planes, and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin is a great comic romp with lots of travel. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys or needs a good laugh. We are all, I think, travelers in Time and Space and it is so easy to get caught up in the illusions of this adventure and forget what we really came here to do.
What is that you say? Well, call me crazy, you won’t be the first or the last I am sure, but I think we are here to experience the illusion of limitations. Many things, clues hidden in plain sight cause me to think that. Three short Bible verses come to mind “Ask whatsoever you will and it shall be done. “Be it unto you even according to your faith.” And, “All things are possible.” Or for you less biblically minded folks how about some song lyrics, “I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky…” “To dream the impossible dream…”
About a hundred years ago the airplane was invented out of dreams from the minds of men who have always dreamed of flying. Boats, trains, and automobiles too were first dreams and then something more substantial. We by our thoughts and words create the world around us. In many ways our world is like the movie, The Matrix, but a construct, a sort of mass delusion that we have all bought into. If we but free our minds of all the self limiting beliefs we have believed since we were children what miracles we would see. Heavy, you say, nothing compared to the exceeding weight of glory that is ours. We are beautiful and magnificent beings. One last clue from a cricket that sang to us as children, “When you wish upon a star your dreams come true.” You are, my friend, that bright and morning star. Wake up and smell the coffee.
Your fellow traveler, sharing a cup of Joe with you,
David White
