Little House On Wheels On The Prairie

Blog 52 – 6.17.15

For most of the last three years I have lived in a nineteen foot pull behind RV camper trailer. I purchased this little home on wheels in Green River, Wyoming and have moved it three times. It has all the bare necessities, sleeping area, eating area, small kitchen area, bathroom with small tub and shower, closet and surprisingly quite a bit of storage space. I am on the job as a pipeline inspector most of the time so it serves my needs as a comfortable place to rest.

Jesus once remarked to his disciples, “Foxes have holes, birds have nests but the Son of Man has no where to lay his head.” I have much more than a place to lay my head. I even splurged and have a Direct TV satellite dish on top of my trailer and get all the movie channels with a DVR to record anything I care to watch. I am grateful for my little house on wheels on the prairie.

I have had my trailer parked at the KOA Kampground in Crawfordsville, Indiana for over a year now. That is the longest I have lived in it in one place. Since I spent a cold Yankee winter in it last year I skirted it to more easily keep warm and it makes it look more permanent but it is not.

The lines I often quote from a church song come to mind, “This world is not my home. I’m just a passing through.” We are tempted to think if we have the same job awhile, live in the same house awhile, or have the same people in our lives awhile that there is some permanence to this life. But it is an illusion. We are only here a little while to learn a few things, grow a bit and move on. People and places come in and out of our lives on a daily basis. Sometimes the changes take place slowly which adds to the illusion of sameness but actually we and everything around us is always changing.

How much easier it is to move when your house is on wheels. It works for me. If you prefer a a bigger place without wheels that’s okay too. Jesus knew he did not even need a regular place to sleep because his mission here was short. Ours may last a bit longer but we too are only here for a little while. Enjoy your stay and if your path takes you near Crawfordsville, Indiana in the near future stop by and see me. You might want to call first because me and my little house on wheels might have moved on down the road.

David White

  1. I had a friend that converted his two car garage into a living quarter. It had a sink, stove, bed ,commode, sink and most importantly,a pool table and pinball machine.I told him it was all I needed.Over in the Middle East people that think like us are called Bedouins.

    1. Rog,
I think we are all travelers really. This adventure in Time and Space offers us many illusions. The one that a lot of people buy into is “home and permanence here” as many of our family and friends that have pass off this stage people still want to think this place has something concrete to count on. Why even concrete crumbles in time. But there is Something real and lasting I think. That GPS inside us that guides us HOME. Love you, Man.
