As the title of today’s piece suggest I want to talk about personal tastes. Just why is it somethings appeal to us while others do not? Why do we find some body types more stimulating or appreciate some foods and detest others? Why do some of us love sandy beaches and others prefer mountain heights? Taste.
The Big Bopper was a famous Rock singer in the late nineteen fifties. He died at the height of his career along with Buddy Holly in a plane crash. That day is referred to as The Day The Music Died. One of my favorite songs by the Big Bopper goes like this:
Chantilly lace and a pretty face
And a pony tail a hanging down,
A wiggle in a walk, a giggle in a talk,
Ah, it makes the world go round.
There ain’t nothing in the world
Like a big eyed girl
To make me act so funny
Make me spend my money.
Oh, Baby, that’s what I like.
Well, many of us guys have similar taste but some may not care as much for Chantilly lace or pony tails as they do other attributes. But, why is it we so often confuse our particular taste for truth? My dad was quite famous at least to those who knew him for his strong opinions. I found a little poster once with a lion cub sitting in a wicker chair like a throne and the caption was, “It’s My Opinion And It’s Very True.” That was my dad, whose personal motto was, “I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong.”
Most often is not even a matter of right or wrong just personal taste. I met a man recently who does not like corn in any form or fashion. I teased someone I was telling about this rare, at lest to me, particular taste that maybe the guy was scared by an ear of corn as a child. My friend replied that maybe he had just eaten too much one time and it ruined it for him. A bad experience or a “too good” experience can alter our tastes sometimes.
Part of what makes us the interesting people we are is that we have different tastes and opinions. As the French say Viva la difference. Enjoy the great variety in the world and know this beautiful crazy quilt would not be as beautiful if even a single thread were missing.
