Several years ago I had a work assignment in Birmingham, Alabama. I had not seen my brother, who lives in Atlanta, for sometime. I gave him a call hoping that I might drive over to see him on the weekend. My mother, before she passed had told me of his wonderful weekend place in Tennessee up near the Kentucky border north of Crossville. My wife, my son, and I had visited there one weekend and had a wonderful time. As it turned out my brother and his companion were going to be at that lovely weekend place that weekend and he invited me up.
I got off work about 5 pm and was packed and ready to make the drive. The first several times I made the drive there I had quite a bit of trouble locating the place. Had not Edwin, my brother’s dear companion come looking for me after sunrise I would never have found them. There is no cell phone service for my carrier for many miles around my brother’s place. I had a wonderful time with by brother Robert, and Edwin that weekend.
Sunday morning Robert made breakfast for the three of us and was telling me about a cabin he had bought nearby. Later in the day he drove me over to see it. My brother has excellent and expensive taste and has made his living for years designing home furnishings for the rich and famous. This “cabin” looked a great deal more to me like a rustic Swiss chalet. I joked when I saw the utility shed, “Now that’s a cabin.” Robert told me the next time I had a weekend off I was welcome to stay in the cabin.
A couple of weeks later when my assignment ended I drove back up to their place not far from Jamestown, Tennessee to see them again and spend the night in my brother’s cabin. While there we visited and had dinner with their friends Ron and Doyle who lived near my brother’s place and they had several of their gay friends spending the weekend. Though I am not gay the group made me feel quite welcome and I met new brothers that I found as easy to love as my first brother, Robert.
I had a great time in Robert’s cabin which I started to refer to as Brothers Cabin affectionately. Robert told me if I ever had a work assignment in the area that I was welcome to stay there rent free. I took several pictures inside and out with my Jeep and things in the pictures because I wanted to visualize myself living there. Just a little over a year later and after a couple of wonderful jobs overseas I got to live in Brothers Cabin for over two months while I worked in Livingston, Tennessee, about thirty miles away.
My time at Brother’s Cabin was a dream come true. I am grateful for the opportunity. I am grateful for my brother and all my brothers, those I have already met and those I have yet to meet.
